Reflections on the Occupation 2018

This project looks back at the Nazi occupation of Guernsey and the effect this had on the locals at the time. The cold grey concrete is synonymous with the bunkers and fortresses that scatter the coast line of the island. Today they are a tourist attraction, however, to many they are a painful reminder of the culture we lost.

My first Guernsey I photographed on the beach in shallow water as that seemed the most appropriate when talking about an island. I think keeping it dry and displayed say in a white cube space would have diminished the symbolism behind it.

When displaying the second iteration with barbed wire I chose to leave it on the board as the clay markings surrounding the island looked similar to the waves and rocks that swirl around guernsey and it lead to much more dramatic studio photos using light and shadow to emphasise the jagged edges.
