Digital Island 2020
This project too shape after the completion of previous video artworks, I had experimented with various ways of exhibiting during a pandemic, youtube premiers, instagram live or reels, and I found that none of these created the same sense of an occasion as an in person physical exhibition did. The fact that social media is so saturated with other content meant youre in competition for people's time. By creating a website dedicated to my work and using some basic instruction and tools I could create something interactive that pulls together months of work into a themed exhibition that also extended my research.
I also found the idea of a metaphorical island fascinating, used as a way of exploring ideas or situations in a hypothetical universe gives space for different opinions or thoughts to grow. This is present in 'The Book Of the City Of Ladies' written in 1405 by Christine de Pizan and 'Utopia' by Henry Moore as well as other artists work such as the 'Dark Continents' series by Tai Shani.
This fascination with how people not from an island view islands and the poeple that live there lead me to create a digital island on the website with the artworks scattered throguh it to create a kind of treasure hunt for the viewer. This island with no real location, feels disconnected from real life, yet can always be accessed from anywhere that there is internet is as ghostly as its content.
By having viewers of the exhibition navigate the site themselves with minimal instruction it allowed me to study how people behave when presented with this new situation, where theyll start scanning the screen from and if theyll follow roads assuming the works will be situated as if on a real map location, or if theyll use the entire webpage space.
The interactive map was drawn in Adobe Illustrator, the videos edited in Premier Pro and the exhibition is staged on a Wix website.
